Vendìcari, the beach

Our ideal journey in Sicily continues, with the  Oriented Nature reserve Animal Reserve of Vendicari.

Many pics and two short articles of Margherita Montoneri: the first about the amazing beach, and the second about the things to see.

Vendicari was like a party.

We went there by boat with all the relatives for some gargantuan picnics, according to a family tradition going back to the dawn of time.

The sandy seabed and the crystal clear water, shallow and warm, so that you have to walk a long time before you get to the deep end, were fine for us kids because there seemed to be "offshore".  The backdrops of the "Spinazza" [the beach of Marzamemi, n.d.t.], in front, a few Km away, are more various and tangled, with large meadows of Posidonia, interspersed with rocks and shallows. At that time I didn't know but in Spiazza I had the best snorkeling of my life, amongst octopuses, flounders, moray eels and fish of every size and form, that I couldn'ìt identify. Anyway, Vendicari had a special charm.

Vendicari was a beautiful sea immersed in history and surrounded by lush nature, one of those incredible interweaving between wild and human that is found almost only in our country.

It's flocks of pink flamingos flying over your head while you are taking a bath, and then go to drink in the "Pantano Grande" [Great Morass n.d.t.], where their ungainly call resounds until well after sunset. Vendicari is bushes of myrtle, phyllirea, and mastic filling the air with their scent,  condominiums of herons on the trees, and a whole birdwatching handbook between the plants, the morasses, the sky.

And it's also the History: in Vendicari you take a bath under below the remains of the "Tonnara" [Tuna fishery, n.d.t.] and of the Torre Sveva [Swabian Tower] (the latter probably dating back to the early 1400 and built against Saracen and Barbay pirates incursions). The tuna fishery, named also “Bafutu”, was built in the seventeenth period, even if, like the one of Marzamemi, follows the Arabian model.

The Oriented Nature reserve Animal Reserve of Vendicari is between Noto and Pachino, in the province of Siracusa (Sicily).

With its almost 1500 hectares of untouched nature, the free access to the beach and its easy paths, Vendìcari is a real birdwatching paradise.

Being only a few Km from the climbing spot of Avola, its beach is the climber meeting point at the end of the day.

But, being a few dozen of Km from the other climbing spots of Ragusa and Siracusa, it's also an ideal spot for family tourism.
