Scanno Crag is one of the most interesting climbing areas in Valley Peligna/Alto Sangro area. The walls rise directly above Lake Scanno, renowned for its distinctive heart shape, and are located just a short distance from the lakeside chalets and accommodation facilities.
The approach is short and straightforward: it starts from the lakeside road and quickly reaches the base of the routes, which offers a particularly scenic view over the lake.
The rock is compact limestone in shades of yellow-red and grey. The walls are predominantly vertical or slightly overhanging, with some dihedrals and occasional cracks. The routes (just over 40 in total) provide varied climbing, both technical and athletic, characterized by sharp edges and well-defined pockets.
The crag offers a diverse selection of climbs: there are routes suitable for beginners, as well as mid-grade and upper mid-grade lines requiring solid technique and endurance.
The crag was developed as part of an environmental enhancement project promoted by the Municipality of Scanno. The first routes were established by Mountain Guides Gino Perini and Agostino Cittadini; the area was later expanded by local climbers, including Davide Rapone, Edoardo Fronterotta, Francesco Silvestri and Mario Bultrini.
Situated at approximately 800 metres above sea level and facing south / south-west, the crag is ideal during the mid-seasons. In winter, climbing is enjoyable on sunny days, even with snow on the ground; without sun, however, temperatures can be quite cold.
The base of the walls is wide and free from exposure. The short and comfortable access makes the site suitable for families with children.
