Falesia di Soriano - Fonno della Botte
Thanks to the great cleaning work of the “La Menica Alta” association, in 2020–2021 the crag was brought back from being overgrown with vegetation and equipped with the first routes. In the following years it was further developed with additional routes of increasing difficulty, up to 8A+, along with other projects yet to be freed, thanks to the contribution of local equipers such as Adriano Quatrini, Valerio Gabrielli and Cristiano Castaldi. The crag is made of volcanic rock known as “Peperino delle Alture” (ignimbrite), very fine-grained and compact on most routes, except for some more fragile sections which, for those who trust it, still offer excellent grip. Vertical and slightly slabby faces are the most common, while overhangs are few but physical and enjoyable. Good footwork, combined with solid tactics, can make the difference in how hard the routes feel. Painful crimps, flared pockets, and balance—similar to the nearby Bagnaia—define the difficulty of onsight climbing even at easier grades. Pay attention in the days after rain, when the rock—especially in the more delicate sections—loses some of its compactness, making small holds and footholds less reliable. Soriano nel Cimino is a small medieval village worth a visit, with the Orsini Castle and its historic center. The area offers several hiking options, starting from the village and developing on Monte Cimino and through its woodlands. Combining climbing with a walk in these surroundings makes the day even more complete.Soriano nel Cimino
Above the village, and above the Fonno della Botte crag, rises Monte Cimino, covered by a remarkable ancient beech forest of great natural value.
